On Wednesday, August 22, 2012, our family lost a great woman. My
Grandma (AKA Mammy)/Madison's Great Grandma, passed away. I have many
fond memories of Mammy and Pappy growing up. I used to stay with them
in PA for a week out of the summer and we always found something to get
into! I remember walking the hills to the baseball diamond behind there
house to find baseballs in the woods. I remember walking to find cans
to turn in for money, which was so cool when I was little because I got
to keep it! I remember Mammy letting me put make-up on her. No matter
how silly she looked she always told me I made her look beautiful! I
remember the baking that went on in her kitchen. She sure could cook!
And that's just to name a few of the fond memories that I have. She was
a loving and caring woman and she will be missed dearly. Since this is
a memory book for Madison, I wanted to include her obituary. It read
as follows:
Rebecca Zapotosky, 85, formerly of Houston, passed away Wednesday,
August 22, 2012, in Hawthorne Woods Assisted Living, South Strabane
Township.
She was born June 12, 1927, in Delmont, a daughter of the late William Henry and Ella Ruth Morgan Kersten.
Mrs. Zapotosky lived most of her life in Houston.
She was a member of St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg.
Mrs. Zapotosky enjoyed gardening, crocheting, bingo and cross-word
puzzles but especially loved to spend time with her daughters,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On November 2, 1946, she married her beloved husband, John Zapotosky, who passed away May 20, 2005.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda (Victor) Sulkowski and Rebecca (Ted)
Domine; two granddaughters, Kelly (Scott) Stetor and Leah (Jon) Gluvna;
three great-grandchildren, Haven and Adelyn Stetor and Madison Gluvna;
three sisters, Ruth Kisow, Elizabeth Jane Vankirk and Nancy Pozonsky;
and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are four sisters, Anna Blumen, Eileen Kersten, who died in
infancy, Alice Virginia Kersten and Laura Mae Morgan; and four brothers,
Fredrick Christopher, William H. “Red,” Earl Leroy and Harold Eugene
Kersten.
At the request of Mrs. Zapotosky, visitation will be private. A Mass of
Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 25,
in St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg. Please meet the family at the church.
Interment will follow in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg. Arrangements
are entrusted to Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra,
owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120.
While Mammy will be missed by many, I was
lucky to have a grandma until the age of 30, and I feel very fortunate
that she was able to meet Madison, and Madison her.
We all love you and miss you Mammy!!!!!
